The 2007 YELL sessions on 27 June and 26 October were held in an atmosphere of frank sharing.

Far East Organization's CEO Mr Philip Ng, and Executive Directors Mr Owen Ow and Mr G L Yap were invited by the Knowledge Management Committee (KMC) to share their leadership journey and experience with our young executives.

Mr Ng and Mr Ow were the first guest speakers. They were from separate ends of the spectrum: Mr Ng came from a privileged background and had his educational grounding in world-class institutions, King's College, London University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr Ow who is also the CEO of Yeo Hiap Seng Malaysia, gained his mettle from the University of Life. With sheer determination and hunger for knowledge, he worked in various jobs from car mechanic to truck driver to salesman, before rising to become the Chairman of Danone Group Indonesia and President Director of Danone Aqua Group of companies prior to joining Far East Organization and Yeo Hiap Seng.

Mr Ng and Mr Ow held the audience in thrall as they recounted their life and work experiences, sharing inspiring stories and perspectives, which opened a window into the attitudes and philosophy that guide their paths in life.

Mr Ng's advice to the young executives was to be open and learn from people from various backgrounds and educational levels. He shared that it is important to love what one does and hopes that they will find their stay in Far East Organization a meaningful and enjoyable journey in personal development. His vision is to be challenged by his people who in their pursuit of excellence will truly make Far East Organization the Developer of Choice.

Mr Ow stressed the importance of personal qualities. He said, “hardwork never kills anybody”, but one must also develop courage, and seek knowledge. These qualities will be the foundation from which one builds one's dreams.

To Mr G L Yap, our October guest, to have the right attitudes is the most important quality one can have whether in life or at work. Mr Yap gave the young executives a piece of very practical and expedient advice on progressing in one's career: “one must be prepared for opportunities - lay the ground, gain knowledge, and be ready for a position”.

Young Executives Learning Lab (YELL) is a platform to gain insights on business, leadership, life and living through the experiences and personal journeys of young entrepreneurs and industry captains.
