Expansion of Changi Airport
Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong had announced on the National Day Rally 2013 that Changi Airport will be expanded to include an iconic mixed-use complex codenamed “Project Jewel”, two new terminals and a fourth runway.
Project Jewel and Terminal 4 will be ready by 2017. The airport expects to be able to process up to 85 million passengers a year by then. Changi Terminal 5 is expected to be ready by mid-2020s, doubling Changi Airport’s current capacity and going a long way in ensuring Singapore’s competitiveness as an air hub (Click here to view article). PM Lee also noted that the Airport and its related services provide some 163,000 jobs and account for 6 per cent of Singapore’s GDP.
Changi could be “CBD of the east”
Changi Business Park was launched in 1997 as part of the Government’s plans to decentralise economic activities. It had since attracted many companies seeking high quality business space outside the Central Business District (CBD). SUTD is a research-intensive institution that focuses on technology-intensive design education and research. Established in collaboration with MIT, SUTD is expected to serve as a new engine of knowledge creation and talent attraction that will help boost Singapore’s economy. The university is operating from its Dover campus currently and will move to its new campus at Changi by 2015.
